Occlusion and Posture

The relation between malocclusion and other pathologies

The knowledge of the ratio between occlusion and posture (*bibliografy) is steering orthodontics towards an important change in the diagnosis and treatment of malocclusions It is fundamental to carry out a diagnosis and therapy that take the patient's absolute individuality into account.

Curiosities

Galliani (Milan Football manager):
"The Cissokho affair topples"

"Following the Wednesday medical examinations, that showed a dental problem which reflected on the posture with possible bone and muscle consequences, Milan had in fact asked Porto to limit the matter to the loan, renouncing the definite transfer in order to evaluate the real conditions of the quarterback in time.”

Malocclusion and pathologies of the temporo-mandibular articulation are accompanied by ailments that appear in sectors distant from the oral district:

  • backache,
  • cephalagy,
  • sleeping disorders,
  • stress,
  • otitis,
  • tingles in the hands

Currently around the 70% of the population presents these problems and the age in which these appear varies from 15 to 60 years. Women are affected mostly.
In an attempt to recover their well-being these patients turn to many specialists who are not able to link the various symptoms that appear with the occlusion and articular disorders.
All this confirms the tight correlation between occlusion and posture.

POSTURE CHANGES WITH OR WITHOUT PLAIN COTTON WOOL in the mouth
(Messermann test)

An orthodontist can no longer just take a look at the teeth in a static sense but must take a diagnostic approach aimed at acquiring a broader vision of the “body system” in its dynamics. All this confirms the close correlation existing between occlusion and posture.
The mouth must be observed in its functional and dynamic wholeness:

  • check how the deglutition takes place
  • if the tongue lays on the palate,
  • if breathing is nasal
  • if mastication is bilateral

An incorrect lingual posture will cause asymmetric tensions of the mastication muscles involving the cervical tract of the vertebral column up to altering the podalic support impeding a harmonic deambulation.
A well-balanced mouth mirrors the patient’s global equilibrium perfectly.
